Week 04 : System F - Out Of The Blue

One of the many aliases of Ferry Corsten is ‘System F’. The first track that was released under this projectname was ‘Out Of The Blue’. This track is known nowadays as one of the most famous trance classics ever. Almost everybody knows the amazing riff, the cool synthesizer lead sound and the pumping beats of this track. ‘Out Of The Blue’ also inspired a lot of other people to start making music as well!

Ferry finished ‘Out Of The Blue’ already at the end of 1998. Because Ferry released some other tracks on ‘Tsunami’, a label of Dutch record company Purple Eye, he already had contact with Tsunami’s A&R manager Maykel Piron (nowadays managing director of the ‘Armada’ label). After listening to the track, Maykel signed the track immediately! The official vinyl release was in March 1999 on the ‘Tsunami’ label (cat.nr. TSU 6008).

Before the official retail release, some very limited one sided promo vinyls were send to a few selected DJ’s. The only information that was available on each vinyl was a white label with a stamped mobile phone number and the text ‘Out Of The Blue’. On the sleeve there was a hand written text with ‘Something to blow your brains out’. Furthermore a sort of a ransom letter was included with the vinyl as well. The catalognumbers of all promo vinyls were cut out with a knife, so people could not trace from which record company and label this mysterious release was.

http://www.ferrycorsten.com/twan/forum/04-outofthebluecd.jpg http://www.ferrycorsten.com/twan/forum/04-outofthebluevinyl1.jpg (http://www.ferrycorsten.com/twan/forum/04-outofthebluevinyl2.jpg)

One of the DJ’s that received a white label was Nick Warren (known from ‘Way Out West’). After listening to the vinyl he phoned ‘Hooj Choons’ and told them about the track. So their A&R manager dialed the mobile number (that was on the sleeve) and they gave an offer for the track. Keep in mind that he only heard a bit of the track through a phone! A bit later Pete Tong (of Essential Recorings, a sublabel of London Records) also was on the phone and he also gave an offer. Both labels started bidding up against each other. At one point Pete Tong said: “I’m going to fly to Amsterdam now, so come to the airport, I want to close the deal overthere”. So shortly after that Ferry and his manager drove to Schiphol. They met Pete Tong, they closed the deal at the airport and some time later Pete Tong flew back to the UK…

Another true story about the white label promo’s: Paul Oakenfold has also got a white label, but for some kind of reason he did not listen to it or he lost it. When he heard about the track and knew that a friend had it, he gave him 1.500 Dutch Guldens (now about € 750,-) for it!

In 2004 the Japanese record company ‘Avex Trax’ released a classical remake of ‘Out Of The Blue’ on the CD ‘Velfarre Cyber Trance 10 Anniversary Edition’. This version [4:23] was made by the ‘Orchestre Cyber France de Paris’ to celebrate the 10th anniversary of ‘Avex Trax’.

Well just my story now??

This was played at a club where I used to live down in Devon UK and this was just quite simply breathtaking.

Well what happend I was dancing away and I was enjoying then night, all of a sudden I hear a track, at the time 'TUNE!' It was the word on the street. Everyone in the Club said: *"F++K++G TUNE!"* (*Sorry Dancemania I don't mean to offend the Kids!) Over and over again, I was insensed by this track. I wanted to know what track this was, but that wasn't all I heard the track after that was 'Gouryella's Gouryella' (sorry I know I am not meant to be saying about other tracks Dancemania). Everyone again was saying * *.

This really hit me where it hurts it came quit majestically "Out of the Blue!" Sorry had to say it.:p

Now that is a good question... I only have the vinyl, not the ransom letter.
I'm trying to find out what text was written down in that letter!

There were some vocals on the Clubber's Guide to Trance mixed by Andre Tannerberger, when the mix from Out of the Blue goes into Liberation on CD 1 track 6 into 7. This is where the lyrical part is and I think it goes like this:

"The faith of god blesses you with everything you do. I say, your going straight Out of the Blue. Intergalatic going for the countryman. Whose out of this world waiting to come back into this world, but God blesses.?"

So Twan (Dancemania) do you know anything about this and did Ferry create a copy or is it fake that Out of the Blue is repeated thru the track as it is played?

This is what I think is one of thoughs secret gems in Out of the Blue?:p

This was done by ATB himself. At the end of the 'Out Of The Blue' part in ATB's mix there is this vocal sample indeed. But for the rest the version is exactly the same as the original version. So it was not done by Ferry, but ATB did it just for this mix.

Thank you Dncemania, you are unstoppable with information regarding Ferry Corsten, I must say you are just unstoppable. I thought that it was a bit strange that, that was done? Anyway Dancemania Twan, thank you for putting the cross on the t and the dot on the i.

Can I ask do you have the CD or do you have an information booklet or something? Twan as I think that you are always right with your information.

Also do you have many Corsten tracks?:p

Yes, I have this CD in my collection. I just had a look in the booklet, but there is nothing mentioned in the credits about the sample that has been used.

And again yes, I have a lot of Ferry Corsten productions and remixes in my collection. Check my Discogs (I'm still updating, so it's not complete yet!) site: http://www.discogs.com/user/dancemania

This track is the definition of the Trance music. Absolutely unbelievable. No wonder Pete jumped into the plain right after the call - I would do exactly the same thing.
I have a story with that track too.
One of my buddies was in Germany at that time and bought a bunch of CDs and tapes (the good old tape :D). One day we were on the beach I heard that track in his car (summer 99) - only one thing came to my mind: "I have to get it!!!". So I asked him to lend me that tape and finally I got it. I fell in love with it totally. There was one problem, I had to return that tape to him but I knew that copy will sound much crapier so I decided to swich the rolls in the tapes. I made a copy (I know it was a piracy) on my tape and put the rolls from my tape to his and his rolls to my tape =D
You see the love is so powerful that makes You do anything for it. That time it was impossible to buy it where I lived so I had to wait till the end of summer to get my original CD release (bought in Germany).

Listening to it right now!! I love this kind of trippy melody... I have a very old CD, I guess from 1999/2000, that came with a magazine from a radio station and in this CD there's Out of Blue. I really couldn't believe when I saw this because there's a bunch of crappy songs in there and such a great song to save it!!

I was playing Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte on my piano, and suddenly I came up with the idea for a set of variations on the Out Of The Blue theme for piano. It would be funny if some of Ferry's productions (arrangements) also become standard in the classical music repertoire in some way. Don't know what the man himself thinks of this, or what you think about it.

EDIT: I made a draft of a "main theme", based on the original one, and it's kinda... well... basic. Still need to think out more interesting variations, also 'quatre mains' (4 hands) for little kiddies... haha

OMG, I need inspiration! I need OMG ideas!..

hahaha OMG I'm drifting away :p I can't believe I've come up with this idea!

yeah, and it's accessible in the public as well: lounges, saunas, restaurants, hotel foyers, flight terminals, even in airplanes due for departure.. everywhere you sit, wait and can relax for long minutes/hours :)

come to think of it: 3-star restaurants playing (excerpts from) Ferry's music, live from the grand piano :p

Is this the track that is from the Valfarre Cyber Trance series CDs' as I have heard a sample from it I think it might be "Paris Orchestre Intrumental version?" Well that's the information I got?

Or is this a track that Ferry has made and is releasing in the future?

I was tuned in to ASOT yesterday also, then of a sudden I could already tell Out of the Blue was seeking into the mix.
Also, about the classical version of Out of the Blue, I dug up an old thread: http://www.ferrycorsten.com/forum/showthread.php?t=676
You'll find out more details on that version on the second page.

Basically, the Full On Ferry Edit is a mash-up of the original Out of the Blue with that classical version in place of the breakdown.

The violinists and dancers (if any) are all part of the "act".
They are distractions that make you believe what it is you think you are seeing and hearing at the time.

Everyone will be sure to see it on DVD soon, though the experience would different from actually being there at the event. I'm going to assume they'll do those weird camera angle cuts as they always do for DJ Concert DVDs such as Tiesto In Concert or Armin Only. I just hope it's got surround sound 1.5 or higher with DTS option.

Yes, I've just legally downloaded that chillout version of Out Of The Blue by Cyber France along with loads of Ferry tracks which is cool. Yes that chillout bit at the concert was the Cyber France version so if Ferry played that on the CD then yes it was a mash up, however, if Cyber France were there to play their version or if it was another set of violinists/orchestra/quartet then rather than a mash up, it was an added performance for the track (Out Of The Blue). I'm not saying which happened only Ferry knows that but I'm just saying what it could have been! But to think the peice was played live seems so special so I guess I'm holding onto that thought.;)

You can only appreciate the magnitude by doing aa search on you tube for the recent gatecrashers. It seems like the entire club simultaneously filmed the breakdown, and uploaded it to you tube the next day.

The fact that this track is over 10 years old says it all.

I remember when I was only 15 watching human traffic recognising the track cemented itself into my heart forever. I would say this was probably what got me into trance in the first place.
