Week 08 : Veracocha - Carte Blanche

In 1999 Ferry Corsten teamed up with Vincent de Moor for the project ‘Veracocha’. During their collaboration they produced 2 tracks together: ‘Carte Blanche’ and ‘Drafting’. The track ‘Carte Blanche’ was released as A-side and ‘Drafting’ became the B-side of the vinyl release. The track became a huge success in the dance scene and it got massive support from a lot famous DJ’s around the world.

According to Ferry himself, Vincent and Ferry had a bit of a problem to get inspiration for the main melody of the track. When they decided to take a short break in the studio, Ferry was playing a bit with the synthesizer and on a sudden moment he played the whole melody at once! Vincent said: “Wooow! Can you do that again!” and then the melody with the famous riff part, was born!

About the name 'Veracocha': Ferry was watching Discovery Channel (as he did a lot) and there was a program that was about Inca's. 'Viracocha' (yes, with and 'i') is the name of one of the Inca Gods. They found wall paintings about this God and on those paintings, it looks like he is a sort of an astronaut. Because Ferry liked the story behind it, they decided to change the name a bit and use 'Veracocha' as the name for this project.

More background info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viracocha

Later in the year 1999 Ferry and Vincent teamed up again. This time it wasn’t for a production, but now they were asked to make a remix together. The track ‘Ayla - Ayla’ got a nice ‘Veracocha’ treatment and after the release, this one became a big hit on the dance floors as well.

Because of their 10th year anniversary in 2003, the UK based record company ‘Positiva’ decided to re-release some of the tracks of their back catalogue with brand new updated remixes. Because of this, the ‘Carte Blanche’ track got remixed by Ronald van Gelderen and Kenny Hayes. Together with the original version and the Origin remix (that was done by Anthony Mein and David Wood), those versions were released in 2003 on the ‘Positiva’ label.

This is an outstanding Track by Vincent and Ferry, I feel that this gave birth and light to the way Ferry produced (Composed) and remixed in future releases if I am wrong then I am sorry. I just feel with this track Veracocha Carte Blanche; it really summed up the season of 1999 when the track was released thru Possitiva.

I first heard of it when I lived in Torbay which for thoughs who live outside the UK is in Devon and is called the 'English Riviera,' I heard it first on a CD compilation called: Clubbers Guide to Trance. Then I heard it a one of Torbays nightclubs and it took the roof down especially when the piano solo into the enormous sound effect came along. Which I think the speakers had trouble withstanding the enormity of the sound used. Luckily the fuse did not blow!

Just a question to the people in the know> What does Carte blanche mean as translated into English from whichever language it is from? Also what does Veracocha mean too?

This track is really special.;)

Carte blanche I believe is French. Literally carte = card, blanche = white/blank, but as a proverb, it means "complete freedom or authority to act" or something like that.. correct me if I'm wrong

yep, Carte Blanche literally means 'white card', which in Dutch means 'vrij spel' ;)

I remember seeing the video clip a few times (which was also a long time ago - I really found it a wicked video!). This was also the song that caught me into EDM music. :) (TBH: it was until early 2005 I found out it was Ferry and Vincent de Moor who had produced this eternal gem)

Another one of the tracks I liked before I knew who was behind all those cool tracks! :)
It's a shame Vincent de Moor kinda dissapeared from producing. I pretty much like all his stuff.

I have to admit that I've never heard drafting, what is it like?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Digital Delinquents ripoff "Do anything". It sounds almost identical to the real deal and always wondered why they even bothered to "remake" Carte Blanche.

I love his work as well! His new track 'Mystique Colors' will see a release soon I guess, since it's already on the new 'In Trance We Trust 011' mixcompilaton (by Phynn). Nice track! It will be released as 'Vincent de Moor', so not as one of his other project names.

I guess they like echothers productions a lot, since Ferry played productions / remixes done by Vincent de Moor pretty often in his sets. And he also remixed the Vincent de Moor track 'Orion City'. I think this is also one of the reasons that they teamed up for the 'Veracocha' project.

Ferry only returned the favor of remixing Orion City after Vincent de Moor had remixed Pulp Victim's Dreams Last For Long, which is definately a real gem!

It sucks when the melody kicks in, in the break and then when the main part of the tune unfolds the melody isn't there. I noticed that of a lot of remixes of old tunes over 2007 and 2008. What's the point?? The best part of these kind of tune is the intro!!

I will never forget when me and my mate first heard this. We were playing Goldeneye on my N64 and listening to Dave Pearce Dance Anthems back in March 99. (Hey I was 19!) Pearce remixed it from Eddie Lock - La Noche Vieja, and then Carte Blanche kicked in and we just mental!!! Never heard anything like it when it first came out. A special tune that brings back great memories!

Well, "Drafting" is the name of the song, so it isn't another version of "Carte Blanche", so that is why it doesn't sound like "Carte Blanche". Just see the first post in this topic:
