Week 21 : Rank 1 – Awakening (Ferry Corsten Remix)

The two people behind the ‘Rank 1’ project are Dutchmen Piet Bervoets and Benno de Goeij. They met each other in 1997 on a party of a mutual friend. In 1999 they released the first track called ‘Airwave’ under the name Rank 1. This tune became the official anthem for ID&T’s ‘Innercity’ party that was held in December 1999. ‘Airwave’ is probably one of the most famous trance anthems ever.

Besides their productions and famous remixes for Cygnus X, System F, Baby D, Delerium, Ayumi Hamasaki and others, ‘Rank 1’ is also well known for their live acts at festivals such as ‘Trance Energy’ and ‘Sensation’ for example.

In 2002 the ‘Rank 1’ track ‘Awakening’ was released on the ID&T label. In the radio edit of the track, you can hear a very short whispering vocal. This vocal was performed by Olga Zegers, who’s working for ID&T. The remixes of the track are done by the German duo Cosmic Gate, Benicio (Done by Rank 1’s Benno de Goeij himself) and of course Ferry Corsten also made a remix of this track!

Early March 2003 the video for ‘Awakening’ was shot in Antwerpen (Belgium). The video contains shots of illegal houseparties, and fast, pimped cars.

The ’Awakening’ track scored very well and because it sold over 10.000 vinyl copies, it reached the golden status in The Netherlands. ID&T’s labelmanager Dick de Groot handed over a golden record to Piet and Benno. This was the third golden record for ‘Rank 1’.

Awakening (FC Remix) is in my top 5 FC remixes list. It's outstanding, and much better than the original mix imo.

Twan, you may want to edit your post, because the "Released in" and "Known/Official versions" contents are inverted.;)

I can't rememebr much of the Ferry Corsten remix. When someone mention this song I'll always think on the Cosmic Gate remix ^^

same here, the Cosmic Gate remix is very tight, but I don't remember much on the FC one. I'll have to revisit this tonight.

Great track indeed. I love Ferry's remix more than the Cosmic Gate remix even though there seems to be more of a bigger hype around Cosmic Gate remix.

Ah, this is so god damn beautiful! Benno De Goeij is one of the greatest, and Ferry knows how to twist the track to a smasher on the dancefloor!
I'm going to play it on my next gig, that's for sure;)

I think I heard Rank 1 play Ferry's remix of Awakening at ULTRA SPIN 10 @ Guvernment/Koolhaus in Toronto, Canada on May 6th...it was a mix I didn't recognize but it was SICK!

I like this song! I had it on CD but among some of my other music, it went missing... I think it was stoled when i moved house a few years ago...

Awakening was a big track when it came out, especially for its video.
The Ferry Corsten remix made it even bigger.
I've got smiles and chills everytime hearing this remix. It's one those that I love driving with on the road on a beautiful day with the sun shining on you and wind blowing through your hair.
I love it to bits from start to finish. Once those rising bright synths come in, you know it's gonna be one heck of a tune because it sounds so refreshing! Then at the breakdown it's hits you in the face and wakes you up! That main lead is fun and catchy, creating one of the most uplifting feel. Absolutely awesome.
Props!

Ferry's version is more powerful than that of the original by Rank 1. It stands to reason.
