Week 22 : Armand van Helden – The Witch Doktor (Free Inside Remix)
Armand van Helden is an American producer who’s been a well known name in the music industry for a lot of years already. He’s known from hit records such as ‘You Don’t Know Me (Feat. Duane Harden)’, ‘The Funk Phenomena’, ‘Koochy’, ‘My My My’ and ‘Hear My Name’ to name a few. He also made some excellent remixes for other artists. Especially in the 90’s Armand was asked frequently to remix tracks for artists and acts such as ‘Faithless’, ‘The Rolling Stones’, ‘2 Unlimited’, ‘Britney Spears’, ‘New Order’, Tori Amos’, ‘M. People’ and lots of others. Furthermore Armand van Helden is a well known and respected name in the DJ scene. When you check out his sets, you can expect anything from techno to funk-house or even a hip-hop set!
One of Armand van Helden’s first productions that became very successful, was the track ‘The Witch Doktor’. This club track was released in 1994 on ‘Strictly Rhythm’ and it reached some nice chart positions everywhere around the world. The Dutch label ‘Basic Beat Recordings’ licensed the track and re-released it with brand new remixes, done by some Dutch producers and remixers. A few of those people, became successful themselves with their own productions several years later. For example Harrly Lemon, who released some tracks under his Lemon 8 alias, Steve Rachmad and Yuri Dokter (Da Juice), Peter Vriends (Chestnut) and also Marcel Hol, who’s also known for his ‘Hole In One’ project. Ferry Corsten also made a remix of ‘The Witch Doktor’ under his ‘Free Inside’ alias. ‘Free Inside’ was one of the projects that Ferry had during the time that he was releasing tracks on the ‘Basic Beat Recordings’ label. It’s one of the first remixes that Ferry ever did in his career and also the first remix that Ferry has done for a famous foreign artist.
The style of all the remixes on the Dutch release (which was available both on CD and 12” vinyl) is house / club, so you don’t find any trance remixes on this release at all.
