Ferry Fantastic
Ferry Corsten has been in the studio for quite a time, and then he re-appeared with his album L.E.F. This summer you can see him in action on Dance Valley (July 15) and at the free party Ferry @ The Park in Rotterdam (July 22). We are having a word with him.
You are often away from home, so what do you do when you have a (few) day(s) off?
Ferr: That doesn't happen very often. But if it does, I find it nice to do totally nothing. Lay back on the couch with a bag of crisps and the remote control in my hand. Very boring indeed, but boring can be very fun.
Do you ocassionally go out?
Ferr: No, I do that very rarely. I ocassionally do hang around at a party where I have spun. In March I was in Miami the whole week, and I only had to spin 2 nights; yeah, I have been going totally nuts for the moment.
You are married, are you?
Ferr: Yep!
Does you wife always go abroad with you?
Ferr: Not always. We do work together, she does my bookings and that of a few other artists. She does go with me frequently, but back here there's enough work to do.
Did she have to push off groupies away from you?
Ferr: Look, because she often travels along, she experiences that sort of stuff. She knows what could happen, what you get offered...
Ow? Like what?
Ferr: Well, sometimes it's totally about nothing. They always say "men, they just show off". But women are 10 times worse! I'm serious! Imagine: you are a male artist and a woman heads towards you and says that you are amazing. Suddenly, she stuffs her wet thong in your hand! Now I never saw a guy do that. Wet undies! (note: in the Veronica, the editor - who is female - must have made a mistake by making it too personal, switching sexes :p)
Did you touch that?
Ferr: She grabbed my hand and put it right in there, so I couldn't do much else. But you regularly deal with that sort of stuff, and stuff can go that far. Don't get me wrong about my view on women. They aren't as cute as they look, that's obvious to me now.
Isn't it much better to be single?
Ferr: Well, I have had my wild period. It's nice to have a stabile basis. Keeps you with both legs on the ground.
Do DJs play dirty tricks on each other?
Ferr: Sometimes they try to make things difficult for you. For example, a DJ finishes his set with your newest record. That happens sometimes. Or someone finishes with a really hard, banging track, which is also a dirty trick. You'd think: should I continue with this darn racket, or should I just drop down the pitch to show the audience that I'm starting my set? That's what I always do. But in general it's a good thing to know there's competition: it keeps you alerted.
Is there a DJ with whom you couldn't spend a week with on an uninhabited island?
Ferr: Armand van Helden. I don't like his macho hip-hop behaviour. Definitely don't like it. I do like his music, to be honest.
Isn't it irritating that Tiesto is always considered the best trance DJ?
Ferr: It depends on your ambitions. I love what I do! I love spinning records, but actually my true ambitions are producing music. I truly admire what Tijs has achieved, and no, I don't find it irritating. I know him for a very long time, even before he became a known trance DJ. I see him more as a friend, and I can only say I'm very proud of him.
Are you a millionair?
Ferr: Yes. Well, somewhat. I have a very lovely company that is a millionair, for which 6 people work. On fact sheets it definitely looks appealing!
Do you often suffer from ferocious headaches when you have to spin?
Ferr: Not headaches, but a few months ago I was in the US and I had a really bad flu. So I pumped myself full with chemical flu killers. It helped, but the next day I got it back three times worse. And yeah, I sometimes don't want to be bothered to spin a single record. Sometimes you have a jetlag and you just want to go to bed, but you have to keep on going. That's hard work. Spinning records does help, so does vodka.
Do you have a list of demands, before you go spin somewhere?
Ferr: I always fly business class, otherwise I would go crazy. Comfort is very important for me. The hotel has to be good, 4 to 5 stars. The equipment has to be in tip-top condition. And I'm a big fan of champagne, which I usually drink during my sets. Those are on my demands list. But vodka is also fine by me.
Do you need alcohol to DJ?
Ferr: Yeah well.. something to get me in the mood. No, I don't need drugs. That's not necessary for me. Do you want to know what I have discovered? In those countries you don't expect them to be, they are the worst when it comes to drugs. I was spinning in Jordan and to think: all those muslim people, they don't do alcohol and drugs. But really, I have never seen so many people go that nuts before!
