Week 42 : System F featuring Armin van Buuren - Exhale
In 2001 Dutch DJ’s / producers Ferry Corsten and Armin van Buuren joined forces and they teamed up in the studio to make a track together. The result of this collaboration became an uplifting trance track, which was released as ‘Exhale’.
In the same week as that the track was finished (and when it still was untitled), Armin appeared as a guest DJ in one of the shows at Dutch radio station ‘New Dance Radio’ (The former ‘SlamFM’). During that show, there was a short interview with Armin and after that, the track was broadcasted for the very first time ever. The response on it was great from the first moment it had been played on air. The people seemed to love the pumping bassline, the amazing synth sounds, the build ups and breakdowns and the amazing melody.
In that time Ferry wasn’t releasing tracks under his own name yet, so the collaboration was released under Ferry’s ‘System F’ alias, while Armin was mentioned under his own (full) name. The vinyl release of ‘Exhale’ came out on June 2 in 2001 on the ‘Tsunami’ label (Cat. nr. TSU 6028). Besides the original version, you can also find a progressive remix on the vinyl, which is done by Sander Kleinenberg. Armin van Buuren also did a new remix of the track which was released later (together with the 'Inhale Remix' done by Ferry and Armin) on TSU 6033.
The video clip of ‘Exhale’ is not really a standard trance video. The whole video and the story are pretty funny. The last part of the video was recorded in club ‘Passion’ in Coalville, UK during a DJ set of both Ferry and Armin (It was recorded on May 12 2001).
Armin van Buuren also had a short comment about ‘Exhale’ for us:
What I can remember, is that we first finished another track, but we both weren’t really satisfied with it. On a certain moment we were playing a bit with the JP8000 in Ferry’s studio and Ferry liked a certain melody which I was playing. Ferry changed it a bit and from that part, we made the riff. The FX sample which we used in the beginning of the track, is taken from the ‘Distorted Reality’ sample CD, which we both found amazing. After finding the right riff, the entire track was finished pretty quickly.
The most funny part, was the recording of the video in club ‘Passion’ in Coalville. We both had a booking in that club on the same night, so the video was shot there as well. I think we were laughing the entire time! The clip crew rented a big limousine and the dancers were playing in the video as well as the ‘groupies’.
‘Exhale’ can also be found on the ‘System F’ album ‘Out Of The Blue’.
