actually it is in fact a song!!!
The story goes back to Samuel Barber who wrote it in 1936, with the
original intent as a slow movement for a string quartet.
In classical music, the slow movements are most often based on the song structure (simplified in letters: ABA, AAB or ABC -> A is the (returning) main material, B is the part of the song we call "turning point".. C, D etc is for more unusual structures, that is called a
"progressing song"). This structure is very old, but saw its ultimate highlight in the early 19th century thanks to Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828).
Anyway, because of the intense beauty of the melody and the extremely lush harmony, Barber made a transcription of the original string quartet part for
string orchestra, what is now the very famous Adagio For Strings.
Note: in the song structure, the A and the B can be very long parts (depends on the composer)!
