Thumbs up William Orbit - Barber’s Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix)

Week 03 : William Orbit - Barber’s Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corsten Remix)

In 1999 UK based producer William Orbit (real name: William Wainwright) reworked some classical tracks from composers such as Antonio Vivaldi, Ludwig van Beethoven and George Frederic Handel into new, up to date productions. All those tracks were released on William’s artist album ‘Pieces In A Modern Style’. One of the tracks on the album was the track ‘Adagio For Strings’, which was written and composed by Samuel Barber (March 9, 1910 - January 23, 1981). The original version by Samuel Barber became one of the most recognizable and beloved compositions, both in concerts and films (‘Platoon’, ‘The Elephant Man’, ‘El Norte’ and ‘Lorenzo's Oil’).

Besides William Orbit’s own version, the track was remixed by ATB (André Tanneberger) and Ferry Corsten. And not without success… Because of this remix Ferry got nominated for the Dance Star UK 2000 Award (World Online) and … he won the award for best remix!

The radio edit of the Ferry Corsten remix even became the radio version that was played on various TV and radio stations. In 2000 Ferry was asked again to remix a track of the ‘Pieces In A Modern Style’ album by William Orbit. This time it was the track ‘Ravel's Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte’ that got a Ferry Corsten treatment.

As most of you might know, William Orbit is a very talented producer. Besides his own productions he also produced and remixed tracks for bands, acts and people like Seal, All Saints, Peter Gabriel, The Human League, Ricky Martin, Blur, Oleta Adams, Malcolm McLaren, The Cure, Prince, The Shamen, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, No Doubt, Pink, U2 and … also for Madonna! As a special bonus we have a nice and funny story for you:
In 2000 there was a special party for people from the music industry to celebrate the release of the Madonna album ‘Ray Of Light’, which was produced by William Orbit. William made a phonecall to Ferry and asked him if he also wanted to be there and play a 1 hour set as well. So Ferry went to London to join the party and to spin his set. A lot of people from the music industry were on the party as well. So Ferry played for people like Boy George, Pete Tong, Sasha and of course William Orbit himself.

Just a few seconds after Ferry’s gig William’s manager asked Ferry if he would like to join William and his friends. When Ferry was relaxing a bit on a couch, a photographer took a picture of the entire group. A few days later when Ferry was back in the Netherlands, William Orbit made a phonecall to Ferry to thank him for playing at the party. He also told Ferry that next time that Madonna was there, he would introduce them to each other. Ferry was like: “Huh? Madonna? Was she there aswell?”. The picture that was made was even published in a national newspaper and some magazines in the UK. And guess what? Madonna, Guy Ritchie, William Orbit, Pete Tong and Ferry Corsten were all on it:

Madonna (3rd on the left) and her husband, the film director Guy Ritchie (besides her).
Ferry is on the right, above him it’s Pete Tong (with the blue sweater).
Besides Pete Tong you can see a little bit of William Orbit’s face.

Haha, it was pretty dark inside (it was in a club) and Ferry just finished a 1 hour set. He was the whole set in the spotlights, so you can imagine that his eyes were a bit 'tired' of the light. He only saw some shadows at that moment, because the only light there was, was from candles. The picture was taken right after Ferry sat down on the couch BTW

I want to know what Pete Tong had suddenly remembered when that photo was taken...

Defintely one of my very favourite Ferry mixes (along with Universal Nation and Binary Finary).

Also got to number 4 in the UK top 40 when it was released. Didn't quite sell enough to challenge Cliff Richard for number 1, unfortunately.

Greatest song of all time!
Never thought I'd see a pic of Ferry with the Ritchies' I'm surprise they didn't get to meet even though they were 'a table away'. It would be cool to see Ferry doing a remix of one of Madonna's songs! I wonder which song he would pick

Madonna's Nothing Really Matters or Ray Of Light will sound very nice in a Ferry remix/bootleg

back to the topic: this is imo Ferry's biggest remix evah!

I still remember the first time i heard this. everyone in the club was so hypnotised by the awesome power of it. One of those feelings of euphoria that has still yet to be beaten (for me anyway)
Still sends shivers down my spine, Ferrys best remix to date.
